Friday Finds


I’ve added much to the TBR list recently! What I’ve listed here is stuff that’s come into my house within the past few weeks—I have no self control! I recently discovered Virago books, so I apent a part of last weekend on ebay, looking to see what I could find. I walked away with:

Frost in May, by Antonia White

Invitation to the Waltz, by Rosamond Lehmann

The Rising Tide, by Molly Keane

And then I added about a dozen more Viragos to my wish list…

Then this week I received a review copy of Great Maria, a reprint of the novel by Cecelia Holland. I enjoyed Jerusalem, so I jumped at the chance to read and review this one.

I also received Juliet, by Anne Fortier, based around the Romeo and Juliet Legend. This is my LTER books from last month, so I need to get to reading it soon.

So, the month is only about 2/3 over, but already I’ve done a bit of damage… bringing the number of books I own but haven’t read up to 100! Yikes.

I have those same three Viragos and am at the moment trying to decide on which Virago (from the pile I have) to pick--I tend to switch--read a Persephone and then a Virago. Unfortunately I tend to move slowly with them so don't read as many in a year as I'd like. Frost in May happens to be one I picked that I might start reading (along with a couple of others...now I have to decide on one...always a hard choice).

Review: The Piano Teacher, by Janice Y.K. Lee

The Piano Teacher is a complicated novel. On the surface, it’s about a love affair between two British ex-patriots in Hong Kong in 1952-3. Claire Pendleton comes to Hong Kong with her husband Martin at a time when the world is still recovering from WWII; Claire takes up work as a piano teacher for the daughter of a wealthy Chinese family, where she meets Will Truesdale, the Chens’ enigmatic chauffeur. The book jumps back in time between the 1950s and the beginning of WWII, when Will is interned in Stanley, a Hong Kong camp for enemies of Japan. On “the outside” is Tudy Liang, Will’s beautiful Eurasian lover. There’s no doubt that Lee’s writing is beautiful. But there’s something lacking in this short, terse novel that I can’t quite put my finger on. First, I think it’s the tenses she uses when taking about each story: that which is set in the 1950s is in the past tense, while the war scenes are talked about in the present tense (confusing, no?)
